short answer
A retatrutide test needs three results: identity by LC-MS (a mass match that separates it from tirzepatide and semaglutide), purity by HPLC, and mg per vial against a reference standard. In Finnrick's data to 20 September 2026, 824 of 3,858 published retatrutide tests failed its default standard, about 22% of classifiable samples. Endotoxin and sterility are separate tests.
What a retatrutide test shows
A full retatrutide test answers three questions first. Is the peptide retatrutide? How pure is it? How many mg are in the vial? Identity comes from LC-MS, purity from HPLC, and content from a measurement against a reference standard. Endotoxin, sterility and composition tests are separate results, and each has its own sample needs.
| Test | What it answers for retatrutide | Reported as |
|---|---|---|
| Identity (LC-MS) | Whether the measured mass matches retatrutide’s calculated monoisotopic mass, 4728.4718 Da | Expected and observed mass, error in ppm |
| Purity (HPLC) | The share of UV-absorbing material that is the main peak | % peak area at a stated wavelength |
| Content per vial | How many mg of retatrutide, as free base, the vial holds | mg per vial, uncertainty, % of label claim |
| Blind GLP-1 identification | Which GLP-1 family peptide is present, or a mix, when the lab is not told the label | Candidates checked and the result |
| Endotoxin (LAL) | Bacterial endotoxin in the sample | EU per mg and EU per vial |
| Sterility (USP <71>, 14 days) | Whether microbes grow from the tested units over 14 days of incubation | Growth or no growth, units tested |
For raw powder, counter-ion (TFA, acetate) and water content (Karl Fischer) explain why the powder weighs more than the peptide in it. The retatrutide compound page lists the formula (C221H342N46O68), the CAS number and the ions a mass spectrometer looks for, such as the 4+ ion at m/z 1183.1252 (calculated).
How often retatrutide fails in published tests
Finnrick, a US testing platform that publishes results from community-submitted samples, is the largest public source. In its data to 20 September 2026, retatrutide had 3,858 published tests: 2,988 passed, 824 failed and 46 were incomplete. About 22% of the samples that could be classified failed. Retatrutide is the most tested product on the platform, ahead of tirzepatide with 2,478 tests.
These counts use Finnrick’s default standard, Purity Focus. A sample passes only if the peptide is identified, HPLC purity is at least 99.5%, and the measured fill is within ±35% of the label claim. Overfill fails as well as underfill. The published counts do not say which requirement each failed sample missed. A “fail” can be a wrong peptide, a purity of 99.2%, or a vial with 40% less than the label. The guide to peptide fail rates compares retatrutide with other products.
Demand explains why labs see so much of it. In an interview published in September 2026, Finnrick’s chief executive said GLP-1 peptides make up 63% of its test requests, and retatrutide plus cagrilintide 38%.
Labs do not always agree on the amount
Content results for the same retatrutide batch can differ between labs. Two published cases:
- Peptide Critic compared six reports from five labs on one retatrutide batch. Content ranged from 10.18 to 12.80 mg, a spread of about 26%.
- graymarket’s Substack (3 September 2025) compared three labs on one batch. Two reported about 30 mg. The third reported 26 mg on both of its vials, about 15% lower.
These are single cases, not proof that one lab is wrong. Labs use different reference standards and calculation bases, and vials in a batch differ. The guide on why labs disagree explains the causes.
Retatrutide pitfalls: tirzepatide swaps, label claims and kits
Mix-ups with tirzepatide and semaglutide
Retatrutide, tirzepatide and semaglutide are long, lipidated peptides that leave an HPLC column in similar regions. A peak at the expected retention time does not show which one is present. ICH Q6A, the international guideline on specifications, says retention time alone “is not regarded as being specific”.
Mass settles it. Retatrutide’s monoisotopic mass is 4728.47 Da. Tirzepatide is 82 Da heavier at 4810.52 Da, and semaglutide is 617 Da lighter at 4111.12 Da. Accurate-mass instruments report errors in parts per million; on this molecule, 82 Da is about 17,000 ppm.
A label is not proof of identity, and a lab that checks retention time only can confirm the wrong peptide. If you doubt a label, a blind GLP-1 identification asks the lab to find the peptide without seeing the label.
Content versus label claim
A “10 mg” label is a claim. The content test measures mg of retatrutide as free base against a reference standard and states the result as a % of that claim. Freeze-dried powder also holds counter-ions, water and peptide impurities, so the powder weighs more than the peptide. Bachem gives a worked example: 5 mg of powder at 85% net peptide content and 98.7% purity holds 4.195 mg of the target peptide. A report must state its basis, because results on total powder read higher than results as free base. The guide on net peptide content goes further.
Retatrutide test kits and strips
No home kit or test strip can identify retatrutide or measure how much is in a vial. Our September 2026 market research found home kits only for hGH and steroids, and none for GLP-1 peptides. The peptide test kit guide explains why a colour change cannot do this job.
How to read retatrutide test results
Check these lines on any retatrutide report:
- Identity: the expected mass, the observed mass and the error. Several charge states (for example 3+, 4+ and 5+) should agree.
- Purity: a % area with its wavelength, and a chromatogram you can see. A number with no trace cannot be checked.
- Content: mg per vial, the basis (free base or salt), the reference standard and the uncertainty. The % of label should use the claim you supplied.
- Safety tests: endotoxin as a number in EU/mg and EU/vial, not only “pass”. Sterility named as the 14-day USP <71> test, with the number of units.
- Report details: a lot number that matches your vial, the test date, and a way to open the report on the lab’s own site.
The guide on how to verify a peptide COA covers the last step. A test result shows what was in the vial. It cannot say whether a product is safe to use.
How to get retatrutide tested
- Ask for a quote. List the product and the tests. Give the label claim, or leave it out for a blind test.
- The quote states how many vials to send. Endotoxin and sterility need their own unopened vials.
- Ship the vials sealed and numbered. The guide on how to send peptides for testing covers packing.
- For a retatrutide test group, pick vials at random from different kits and send three or more. The result then shows how much vials vary. See group testing.
Ordering a retatrutide test from HK Analytical
Which tests to order
Most retatrutide quote requests ask the same thing: which tests do I need? Pick by the question you want answered.
| Your question | Tests to order |
|---|---|
| Is it retatrutide, how pure is it, and how many mg are in the vial? | The standard order: identity (LC-MS), purity (HPLC) and content per vial |
| Could the vial hold tirzepatide, semaglutide or a mix? | Add blind GLP-1 identification and do not tell us the label |
| Is the vial meant for injection research? | Add endotoxin (LAL) and Sterility (USP <71>, 14 days) |
| Is it raw powder? | Add counter-ion (TFA, acetate) and water content (Karl Fischer) |
| Do the vials of one batch hold the same amount? | Add vial-to-vial consistency |
We also test for residual solvents. All of these run on one sample order. The retatrutide page shows the same panel by product form.
How many vials to send
The number of vials depends on the tests you order, so we confirm it in the quote. Sterility needs its own unopened vials. For vial-to-vial consistency, pick vials from different kits: the report covers only the vials we receive.
What the report shows
The report is one page and lists only the tests you ordered. Identity reads Confirmed or Not confirmed. Content is given in mg per vial. A test with a limit reads Pass or Fail, and a test without a limit reads Reported. A detailed PDF repeats that page and adds a raw-data page for each test with raw data: the chromatogram, the peak table, the mass spectrum and the ions we looked for. Both PDFs are signed, and you can check the report at hkanalytical.com/verify. Every report states how the client is related to HK Analytical.
The example reports show the format, including a blind GLP-1 test on an unlabelled vial.
Results within days of receipt. Sterility (USP <71>, 14 days) is the one test that takes 14 days, because the method incubates for 14 days. A test result shows what was in the vial. It cannot say whether a product is safe to use.

Request a quote, choose retatrutide and the tests, and send. We reply by email with a quote and shipping instructions, and confirm the number of vials.
Questions
How do I get my retatrutide tested?
Ask a lab for a quote that covers LC-MS identity, HPLC purity and content per vial. Add a blind GLP-1 identification if you doubt the label, and endotoxin and sterility for vials meant for injection research. You do not need a local lab: samples travel by courier. Ship the vials sealed and numbered.
How is retatrutide tested for purity?
By HPLC with UV detection. The result is the main peak's share of all UV-absorbing peaks, as % area at a stated wavelength. Purity does not tell you how many mg are in the vial, or that the peak is retatrutide. Those need a content test and an LC-MS identity test.
Is there a retatrutide test kit or test strip?
No home kit or strip can identify retatrutide or measure its mg. Telling it apart from tirzepatide needs a mass measurement: the two differ by 82 Da on a molecule of about 4,728 Da. That takes LC-MS in a lab.
Can I get retatrutide tested for free?
Finnrick runs free community testing. You send a vial, Finnrick picks the lab, and the result for identity, purity and quantity is published. Its stated target turnaround is about 4 weeks. A paid test at a lab you choose keeps the result private and lets you add endotoxin or sterility.
How many vials of retatrutide do I need to send?
It depends on the tests you order, so the lab should state it in the quote. At HK Analytical we confirm the number of vials in the quote. Sterility needs its own unopened vials. For a test group, send three or more vials picked from different kits.
What does a failed retatrutide test mean?
It depends on the standard. Under Finnrick's default standard, a sample fails if the identity is wrong, purity is under 99.5%, or the fill is more than 35% above or below the label. A fail does not always mean a fake vial. Read which result missed.
